FELA! and the Energy of the Visceral.

The landmark, Tony award winning Broadway musical “FELA!” tells the true story of Fela Kuti, the legendary Nigerian musician, whose stirring Afrobeat rhythms ignited a generation. Our charge was to create a broadcast spot that spoke to the avid theater goer and novice alike.

Instead of the typical testimonial-based Broadway ads out there, we wanted to create a film that functioned more like a movie trailer – something that would capture the visceral energy of the show and draw people in; sparking curiosity rather than revealing the story.  We opted to put performance and personality first, creating a unique, expressionistic rendition of the show. The result was a moving glimpse into the stage performance of the amazing Fela Kuti.
